It’s official: As Variety reports, Yellowstone will officially come to an end in November with the release of the final episodes of the fifth season of Paramount’s hit series. But good news: A sequel has been ordered and will debut on Paramount in December, and later on Paramount+.
The announcement comes after Kevin Costner – the ruthless John Dutton – is leaving the show amid rumors of his desire to focus on the epic feature Horizon, a project that has seriously affected his availability to film the show.

“Yellowstone was the cornerstone that allowed us to start a world of global hits – from 1883 to Tulsa King – and I’m sure our follow-up to Yellowstone will be another big hit, thanks to Taylor’s brilliant creative mind. Sheridan and our amazing cast for bringing this series to life” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios.
Another headliner?
The exact plot and casting details for this new production are still under wraps, but it was previously reported that Matthew McConaughey is in talks to star in Taylor Sheridan’s new production, “which will feature several Yellowstone characters.” This sequel would allow the story to continue without Kevin Costner while retaining most of the original cast.
“The story of the Duttons picks up where Yellowstone left off in another epic tale. We are excited to bring this new journey to audiences around the world.said David Glaser, CEO of 101 Studios, which produces the show.
Yellowstone, which follows the Dutton family on their sprawling cattle ranch in Montana, has become one of the most popular shows on television. The first episode of season 5, which will air in November 2022, notably attracted 17 million viewers. Since the show’s debut in 2018, two prequel spin-off series have followed, 1983 starring Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill and 1923 starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, as well as a spin-off series set in the present. Day 6666, which should also be released soon.
Until you can discover the sequel next December, the parent series and its prequels can be seen on Paramount +.
