The first crossover between Marvel and DC on the big screen? James Gunn has done it.
The good news for Marvel is that the premiere of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3’ has exceeded already ambitious expectations, racking up nearly $300 million at the 2023 global box office in its opening weekend., scaring away the ghosts of the failure of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’. The bad news, however, is that it is the last film by its creator, James Gunn, and there will not be a ‘Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 4’ with the same director who turned an almost unknown group of comic heroes into the protagonists of several of the highest grossing films in history.
James Gunn, as many of you know, is going to the competition to take the reins of the restructuring of the DC Comics cinematographic universe, taking advantage of the reboot that will be ‘The Flash’ and starting this new phase with ‘Superman: Legacy’a younger Superman than Henry Cavill.
TO James Gunn likes to surround himself with good friends in his projects and several of the actors and actresses who appear in his films have repeated with him several times, even moving between rival studios. With his new movie at Marvel, he has shown it again, taking several DC actors for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3’. What is not so obvious is something that the director himself had to confirm on his social networks, because it is a very, very subtle detail, and it is that It’s not just the actors who have gone from DC to Marvel. Gunn has also “sneaked” a DC character into ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’.
So far, Gunn’s work at DC is limited to ‘The Suicide Squad’ and his HBO Max spin-off series ‘Peacemaker’, where John Cena recovers his goofy, pseudo-fascist character at the service of Amanda Waller’s agents. In this series performers such as Chukwudi Iwuji or Jennifer Holland (Gunn’s wife), actors who repeat collaboration in other roles in the Marvel movie. But there is a ‘Peacemaker’ character who has managed to unite DC and Marvel in a historic easter egg: Eagly.
Who is Eagle? You will ask, if you have not seen the series. Because, if you have seen it, I assure you that you would have remembered it. Eagly is a hyper-intelligent eagle who serves as Peacemaker’s companion, best friend, and pet.. His ability to give hugs even gave rise to a Funko. But, being so iconic, how did Gunn manage to sneak her into ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’?
Among the High Evolutionary’s experimentswhich uses animals to turn them into humanoid creatures with super-developed intelligence, we see an eagle being the object of these atrocities against nature. And a Twitter user, @jax04_he shot a triple from midfield asking James Gunn if that eagle was a reference to Eagly, the great character of ‘Peacemaker’. And, to everyone’s surprise…
That was actually the real Eagle.
