What can happen to Santos’ Eduardo Bauermann after his alleged involvement in a match fixing?

The meeting with the player’s defense will take place this Tuesday (9) and will be decisive for the positioning of Santos

Under investigation by the Public Prosecutor of the State of Goiás, in the Maximum Penalty operation, defender Eduardo Bauermann should see his future at Santos defined this Tuesday (9). This is because the management of the alvinegro club will meet with the player’s defense to clarify the athlete’s alleged participation with a gang that manipulated shares in Brazilian soccer matches to gain advantages in sports betting systems.

There is the possibility that the defender will be preemptively removed from the Santos squad while the MP-GO investigates his possible involvement in the case. This removal can be extended if the entity decides to open a criminal case. The provision, however, cannot have an indefinite duration. It needs to have a deadline to happen. However, this time can be increased or decreased depending on the progress of the process.

The possibility of contractual termination for just cause is already more complex and could only take place in the event of a conviction. Thus, initially, Bauermann could be removed until the end of the investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office. If the entity chooses to file a lawsuit against the defender, Peixe has the right to extend the player’s removal time. Finally, if the court proves the athlete’s involvement in the plan, in addition to the conviction, the professional can have his contract terminated without being entitled to receive any compensation.

According to Veja magazine, Eduardo Bauermann received R$50,000 from a member of the criminal group for being booked with a yellow card in the match in which Santos drew 1-1 with Avai, in November last year, for the Brasileirão . The defender, however, was not punished and since he would have already taken the money in hand, he pledged himself to be sent off in the next match, against Botafogo. The red card was given by the referee to the defender, for a complaint, but after the final whistle, when the penalty is no longer valid for the bet.

In a second moment, “Veja” also published what would have been a conversation between the Santos player and a member of the gang. In it, the athlete is charged for not fulfilling the agreement in the first game and receiving the punishment at a time when the bet was already closed.

Bauermann was contacted by the Santos board after the articles were published, but denied involvement. At the beginning of the second phase of the Maximum Penalty operation, in April, he had asked the management to inform them that he was one of the players under investigation. The defender, however, said that there was an attempt to solicit by the conductors, but that he did not accept the assault. However, the athlete did not report the harassment at the time the situation occurred.

The alvinegro company therefore chose to trust the good faith of the professional and to wait for the investigation to continue without taking any action against the defender. However, Santos now wants to seek more information and have materiality, such as documents and even access to the investigation, if possible, to make a decision in relation to the case. Behind the scenes at Vila Belmiro, the Santos board was pressured into making a “forceful decision” on the situation.
