The leader said that the country stands up for the values that the EU holds dear
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, visited the city of Kiev in Ukraine on Tuesday (9).
The EU chief executive said he was happy to return to the Ukrainian capital, as well as praising the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, for celebrating Europe Day.
“It’s good to be back in Kiev where the values we hold dear are upheld every day. So it’s a very suitable place to celebrate Europe Day,” said von der Leyen.
The European leader visited the wall in memory of those killed in combat for Ukraine, located in front of the monastery of San Michele. Von der Leyen also went to a square where the remains of Russian armor used in the conflict are on display.
“We continue to increase pressure on Russia. The focus is on rigorous implementation of sanctions and taking measures. My presence here is symbolic, but also a sign that the EU works hand in hand with Ukraine on many issues. Kiev is part of our family,” said von der Leyen.
In a press conference, Zelensky said that Ukraine is fighting the “hate politics that Russia has brought back” to the continent. The head of state also declared that he was aiming for a “united” and “secure” Europe.
“I thanked Von der Leyen for the EU’s willingness to supply Ukraine with the necessary ammunition and artillery shells.
We discussed the issue of delivery speed of this ammunition because we need it now on the battlefield,” Zelensky commented.
The Ukrainian president said he expects the 11th EU sanctions package against Russia “to be approved in the near future”, underlining that the measures needed to target the nuclear sector. .
