Japanese tire manufacturer bridgestone announced, in a press release released on Monday 8, the end of the production of tires for cars in the Santo André (SP) plant and the dismissal of 600 employees. The company has announced that the measure will be adopted until the end of this year.
With the end of operations in the city of São Paulo, starting next year, the production of tires for cars and trucks will be concentrated in the plant located in the city of Camaçari (BA).
“Bridgestone Brasil confirms that it has communicated today to its team and the trade union a restructuring of the portfolio of its tire plant located in Santo André. The unit will focus on manufacturing truck, tractor and off-road tires and Firestone Airide,” the statement said.
Currently, the Bridgestone plant in Santo André has 3,400 employees. With layoffs, the number should be reduced to 2,800.
In a note, the manufacturer informed that the change-making decision is part of a “continuous process of assessing the business and the market, to ensure the competitiveness of the company and determine the best allocation of resources, optimizing the portfolio, processes and the culture to follow at the service of the needs of the consumer and the market”.
“Bridgestone Brasil also confirms that this process will involve an adjustment of its team at the Santo André plant and that it is working with the union and its employees on opportunities to reduce the impact of this decision on the affected line team,” concludes the statement .
