The second episode of HBO’s The Time Traveler’s Wife includes Henry performing oral sex on himself, it’s definitely a scene for history.
HBO has long pioneered the art of “pornography” on TV.From the exploits of Carrie Bradshaw and the girls from ‘Sex and the City’, to more recent hits like ‘Euphoria’ and ‘Minx’, which include lots of sex scenes and frontal nudity, and ‘The White Lotus’, which brought ass-eating to the small screen in a way that hadn’t been achieved since the original ‘Queer as Folk’ in 1999.
but the chain may have literally outdone itself with the second episode of ‘The time traveler’s wife’ and this oral sex scene.
First, a bit of context. Adapted by Steven Moffat from the popular novel of the same name by Audrey Niffenegger, ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ follows the love story of Clare Abshire (Rose Leslie) and Henry DeTamble (Theo James), who unintentionally travel between different moments of his own life. This means that for most of the narrative, Clare and Henry are never at the same point in their own timeline, but instead interact with past or future versions of each other.
This also means that Henry frequently meets alternate versions of himself. And sometimes things get… weird.
The second episode of the series, which aired on Sunday night, gave viewers a little insight into how Henry’s father discovered that his son had the ability to travel through time. In a scene that must have inevitably led to the most awkward father-son conversation of all time, Henry’s father comes across a teenage Henry (Brian Altemus) getting a blowjob…from another teenage Henry (also Brian Altemus).
The scene raises a lot of questions that he has no particular interest in answering. On the one hand, the revelation that Henry is a time traveler means that his particular style of autofellatio is used for laughter rather than self-examination.
Is it gay to suck off another man if that man happens to be you? Is Henry really experimenting with the idea of being with another man or is he just taking advantage of a unique situation? Is her love of him for himself more of the sci-fi equivalent of masturbation? Narcissism? Incest even?
It’s unlikely that the series will raise these questions again, as there are plenty of convoluted plots to overcome in the upcoming episodes. But if the television series ends up being like the previous film adaptation, this brief and hilarious scene may end up being one of the most memorable things.
