A black teenager was beaten by his schoolmates as he left the Amadeu Amaral state school in Belenzinho, Sao Paulo. The young man, who will not reveal his identity to preserve his image, was attacked with fists in the mouth and racist insults against the deities of religions of African origin.
The attacks began after a teacher cited the student’s mother, Adriana de Toledo, as an example in class because of her career in defense of human rights and in the struggles of peoples of African origin religions.
The militant is known as “Adriana de Nanã”, the reason for the provocation of the students. The students also directed homophobic slurs at the black teenager and apologized for the rape of Nanã, the deity to whom the victim’s mother is consecrated.
“To provoke him that day, they talked about me. They talked about Nanã, they kept teasing me with my name, different things like that. Because he didn’t fall for the provocation, they said that the entity should be raped” the mother said.

According to the lawyer Cristiane Natachi, the offenses and insults lasted two days and ended with the physical assault. “Coward, about 7 students surrounded him and one of them started beating him,” he explained.
According to the defense, the victim is an intellectually disabled person and his perception of the defense is lower.
Provocations against the victim were frequent
The police report recorded by the black teenager’s mother states that the attackers’ taunts were constant. “Ever since he entered this school, he has been persecuted,” his mother said.
Adriana fears for her son’s safety, because after beating him, the other students followed him on the street. The victim will remotely follow the school calendar in order not to return to the school at this time.

The education ministry says it has taken remedial measures
Requested by the report, the State Department of Education said that “as soon as it became aware of the incident, which occurred outside the school, the management team called the leaders of the people involved to a meeting”.
The unit has adopted the envisaged recovery measures, with registration on the Conviva SP Platform (Placon) and awareness-raising actions in schools.
The file also stated that they organize training sessions to promote the culture of peace, appreciation of life, conflict mediation and anti-racist education within the school environment.
The Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), in turn, reported that the case is being investigated by the 81st Police Precinct.
“The victim was heard and the police authorities summoned the director of the school to make statements aimed at clarifying the facts”, reads the note sent to Alma Preta.
