The Museum of Tomorrow will host an exhibition on 50 years of cell phones

Museu do Amanhã celebrates half a century since the first phone call with an immersive exhibition and the original prototype of the DynaTAC 8000x

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first phone call made with a cell phone, the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro will host the Cellular 50 exhibition, where the public will be able to enjoy an immersive and interactive audio-visual experience with alphanumeric totems, panels and games with trivia and information about the device developed by Motorola in 1973.

The opening is scheduled for May 23 and will have a narrative divided into six sections: Black hole, Mobility and freedom, Disclosure and individualization, Multiplicity, Excess and Labyrinth of possibilities. In each, the audience will immerse themselves in experiences that have marked the generations of mobile phones and their respective impacts, with a final invitation to reflect on what is yet to come.

“The exhibitions that run through the Museum of Tomorrow offer our audience the opportunity to reflect on issues that are part of everyday life and impact our future. In addition to telling the story of the mobile phone from a technological point of view, Celular 50 also think about how it has transformed the way we relate, communicate and behave over time”, explains Bruna Baffa, general director of the Museum of Tomorrow.

Created by engineer Martin Cooper, the first mobile phone was a milestone in technology, anticipating by years a technology hitherto only imagined in science fiction. Known as DynaTAC 8000xthe device shown in 1973 was a working prototype weighing 1.4 kilograms and almost 25 centimeters tall.

Its commercial launch took place just 10 years later, in 1983, now with a lighter body, a battery that lasts up to 30 minutes of talk time, an internal display and an integrated memory for saving up to 30 contacts.

Spectators of the exhibit will have the opportunity to see an original prototype of the DynaTAC 8000x supplied by Dyna LLC, Martin Cooper’s company.

“Innovation is in Motorola’s DNA. From the launch of the first mobile phone, the DynaTAC 8000X, to the present day, we have continued to work to offer consumers devices and solutions that transform everyday life and the way they we connect with the world. Being present at an exhibition like this, directly linked to the history and legacy of Motorola, reaffirms our commitment to offer the public meaningful experiences, delving into the past and awakening curiosity for the future” , says Andrea Brandi, Director of Motorola Brazil Marketing.
