More than 700,000 people have fled their homes in Sudan to escape fighting between rival military factions, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether they were heading for one of Sudan’s seven international border crossings, which at least 150,000 people have crossed, according to figures from the United Nations refugee agency.
IOM spokesman Paul Dillon told a news conference in Geneva that more than 700,000 people have been displaced in Sudan since fighting erupted. Last week, the United Nations agency said some 340,000 people were internally displaced.
“It’s very difficult now[for them]to find money. ATMs are down and the banking system is down. Fuel is hard to come by and expensive,” Dillon added.
In the same interview, the World Health Organization (WHO) said 604 people had been killed and more than 5,000 injured since violence erupted on April 15 between rival factions.
