In the form of questions and answers, I shed light on the issue that has generated discussions, actions by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and arrests of people involved in the manipulation of results and actions in the field; Defender Bauermann, from Santos, revealed a conversation with the criminals
OR Prosecutor of Goiás recently conducted another operation with search and seizure warrants for football players suspected of committing activities within the four lines in last year’s Brasileirão, such as expulsions and gangs co-opting these athletes to carry out the crime in bookmakers across the country . What do we know? Below, in the form of questions and answers, I try to clarify some facts.
This Monday, player Bauermann, from Santos, leaked a recording of himself with possible criminals accusing the athlete of “non-expulsion” in the match between the team from Vila and Avaí, and later in another against Botafogo. The revelation was from the magazine I wait. The club will analyze the facts and make decisions on the case. The player has yet to comment. He could be the first player to be punished for criminal involvement in match-fixing.
What did the Santos player do?
He allegedly agreed with the criminals that he would be sent off in two Santos matches, against Avai and against Botafogo. At first he wasn’t. In the second he provoked the red card after the match. He was accused by criminals.
Santos defender Bauermann received money for committing the crime in football?
According to the revelations of his conversations with an unidentified criminal, he received his share of the deal. The Goiás public prosecutor’s office reports that the payments ranged from R$ 60,000 to R$ 100,000.
Is there a record of the player’s conversations with the criminal?
YES. The recordings were intercepted by the investigation. Check out some of them:
- Edward Bauermann: “Bro, just let me know in advance if you’re really going to make it, otherwise I won’t even get a card for anything, you know.”
- Punter: “Be at peace, brother. It will work. We (sic) always find a way. Brother, if you have told anyone (about) the bet, tell them not to bet anymore, it will take (sic) a while. Let’s go on.”
- Edward Bauermann: “No, no, I didn’t even say anything brother… Luiz Taveira (the defender’s coach) also commented that he was going to make a bet, but he was joking… I don’t think he would. But if someone calls me here to do it, I’ll cut it now”.
- (Hours later) Punter: “Trout, what have you done with your life, bro? What’s up? Trout, what were you paid for, bro???? You’ll pay for all my losses, bro. What is it, trout? ??? ?” .
Are bookmakers already regulated in Brazil?
NO. Brazilians can play on the sites, but they are not located within the national territory. All of them are attached to the outside. The Jair Bolsonaro government was supposed to approve this regulation in his government, but was unable to do it in time. It was then left to the Lula government, which has not even touched on the issue so far, although it indicates that it will do so in the first half of this year.
Why does the government want to regulate bookmakers?
To collect taxes. It is estimated that they move more than R$15 billion a year. Taxes would be collected on top of the sites fee and also on the prizes paid to the winners. As it stands, the government does not make a single cent from bookmakers. There is also job creation in all Brazilian states.
Can anyone play on betting sites?
YES. For this, you need to register with your personal information and follow all the necessary guidelines. The winnings are also deposited on the current account indicated in this register by the bettor. There are no physical assistants on the sites. Everything is done online.
Is there a physical place for these bookmakers in Brazil?
NO. Nor can there be because they are not regulated to operate in Brazil. They are sites blocked in other countries. This should only be allowed when the government approves the law.
Why did the Public Prosecutor’s Office start an investigation into the matter?
Because he received a complaint from Vila Nova, a team from Goiás, according to which there was a player co-opted to create game situations in order to favor a criminal gang of gamblers. From then on, a series of investigations were triggered, discovering groups who acted to evade bets and earn easy money. Everything was a setup.
Why do these gangs co-opt footballers?
Because they are the weakest part of this bond and they are on the pitch, being able to create game situations that match the bets placed on the sites, such as being sent off, getting cards and provoking corner kicks. They take the gangs bets and get paid for it.
What do these players get out of it?
Money. They are seduced into committing the crime for easy money. The deputy revealed that shares of up to R$100,000 were paid per share within a match. There were smaller values of R$60,000.
But don’t these players already have salaries in the clubs?
Yes, everyone has or should have. But they earn little compared to the players of the big teams. Some don’t have long contracts. Others already know they won’t have a job anytime soon because their team may not have a year-round soccer schedule. None of this, however, justifies the commission of the crime. They are seduced by money.
Are betting sites involved in these scams?
For now, the MP has found no evidence that betting sites are involved in these frames. Some are helping with the investigation. Others have mechanisms to check for suspicious betting movements. When this happens or is perceived, the sites initially refuse to accept bets. And they make accusations.
Should clubs that have their games contaminated care about this?
YES. Clubs that have players involved should be concerned. If the offense is proven, the athlete must be arrested and his career interrupted, with a broken contract. It indirectly stains the club’s image, because it is an individual action by the player, but who wears a team’s shirt. Teams that have no players involved and are victims of their rivals need not fear anything.
Will the results of the tainted games change?
According to the CBF, no. None of these games that are under investigation and have been released by the deputy will change their results, nor will any tournament, such as the Brasileirão 2022 and Estaduais 2023, see their champions rejected. What happened on the field still holds true.
Are there people trapped?
YES. There are players and members of these gangs.
