The child, who has been missing since April 30, was found in a vehicle on Monday afternoon8, in an approach carried out by the Military Police of Sao Paulo in the Tatuapé region, in the east area of the capital. Marcellus Valverde52 years old, and Roberta Porfirioof 41, were arrested in the act.
The action of the Military Police of São Paulo was carried out after the sending of information by the police forces of Santa Catarina. “We have become aware of the vehicle used in the disappearance of this child: the license plate and the characteristics of the vehicle,” Lieutenant Sérgio Brandão Donofreo said in a press conference. “Once we located the vehicle, we started following it to find the best time to approach.”
The car, a white Hyundai Creta, was located with the help of the Detecta Program on Avenida Conselheiro Carrão, in the east area. The military police began monitoring him from a distance and approached him on Rua do Tatuapé. There was no pursuit. At the wheel was Marcelo Valverde. In the back seat, Roberta Porfírio and the child, settled in an age-appropriate chair.
“When the windows rolled down and we located the couple and the child, we took every precaution not to startle the child. I even thought it might be a mistake,” said Sergeant Márcio Roberto dos Santos. According to him, the woman claimed that she was responsible for the child and she provided the child’s original birth certificate.
“When we asked where they were going, she said she would try to adopt the baby,” she said. Roberta does not have a criminal case, but Marcelo, who allegedly helped her, has already been indicted for bodily harm, according to the PM. “Early on the approach, they said they were a couple. When they saw the information coming, they ended up changing their story. They started saying they were friends.”
Police found the information inconsistent and asked the suspects to accompany them to the nearest child and youth court, located in Forum Tatuapé. “The Prosecutor’s Office assisted us and sent the child to the Guardianship Council. The adults went to the 30th DP (tattoo)to provide clarification,” Santos said.
What has been learned so far
The main hypothesis of the Military Police, based on what has been ascertained so far, is that the man would have helped the woman find a child in a sort of parallel adoption market. According to the Military Police, the car belonged to a woman and the license plate had not been tampered with upon approach, not specifying whether it could have been changed on another occasion.
“He (Marcello) he said he met this woman at meetings of people who adopt children. I don’t know if she’s legal or illegal, but you know her from meetings of people who want to adopt children,” said Sgt. Santos.
“Then he realized that there was a mother who wanted to give the baby away in the State of SC, he spoke to this woman (Robert) – whom he knew through WhatsApp and these meetings -, the lady took the car and went to Santa Catarina. I don’t know how it was done, but she came with the baby to the state of São Paulo,” she added. She is also investigating the involvement of her mother.
According to the prosecutor, after taking the child back in São José, Roberta would have returned to São Paulo and would have started raising the child together with her husband. The hypothesis of the police is that, given that the situation had repercussions, she contacted the man who had helped her to try to take the girl to the Forum Tatuapé and regularize the situation. Both are residents of São Paulo.
The man and woman were arrested red-handed for human trafficking and the forecast was that a custody hearing would take place this Tuesday afternoon, 9, to decide whether they will respond freely. “The staff is in contact with the family there in Santa Catarina and the paternal grandmother already wants to come and pick up the child,” Santos said.
