It’s the kind of project that you’ll be wondering if it’s a good idea as soon as it’s announced. And this is especially true of True Lies, especially since a long time passed between the start of the series adapted from James Cameron’s cult film and the broadcast of the program!
Launching March 1 on FOX in the United States (and April 19 on Disney+ in France), True Lies was eventually canceled at the end of its first season due to poor ratings and killer reviews. The result clearly exceeds the expectations of the broadcasters, especially since the implementation of the project took more than ten years!
Since September 2010, while crowned with the global success of the first Avatar, James Cameron himself still directed the transfer of the plot of his action film, which was worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, into a TV series.
Thirteen years of development… for nothing
Despite the director’s involvement, the project never materialized and remained on the cards for several years before finally being picked up by director McGee (Terminator Renaissance) in 2017. Things seem to have started well, especially since the show is quickly mentioned on Disney+, but after a few years of development, the series is still stalling.
Finally, only in 2021, a new showrunner was called to head the project. Under the supervision of screenwriter Matt Nix and after many rewrites, True Lies is finally ready to see the light of day! But there was no success, and after thirteen years of more or less active development, the program was canceled after its first season.
In True Lies, Harry Tasker is a seemingly normal office worker whose everyday life is a distraction to his wife Helen, who dreams of more adventures. However, the latter does not know that her husband is actually a secret agent working for the American government. Note that James Cameron’s film is a remake of the French comedy La Totale! By Claude Zid, with Thierry Lhermite and Miu Miu!
You can watch the first season of True Lies now on Disney+.
