Cillian Murphy has gone from Nolan’s usual secondary to absolute protagonist in ‘Oppenheimer’.
The recent trailer for ‘Oppenheimer’, Christopher Nolan’s new film, has finally reached the Internet after its exclusive run through theaters. And it serves as a preview of what seems to be one of the interpretations of the year: that of Cillian Murphy as the father of the atomic bomb. But while Murphy is a regular collaborator with Nolan and this will be their sixth job together, it’s the first time the ‘Peaky Blinders’ actor will star in a film by the ‘Inception’ director.
Murphy, in a conversation with Nolan to ewadmits that he was looking forward to having the opportunity to star in the director’s next film, and more after verifying that the script of ‘Oppenheimer’ was the best he had read in his life.
According to Nolan, he called Murphy when, at the time, no one knew what his next project would be. Murphy remembers how it was when Nolan offered him the part: “It was one of the best days of my life. There was no preamble or anything, I just received the call. So it was incredibly exciting and daunting and scary all at the same time.”
Nolan jokes, “That’s because I haven’t read the script yet,” as if to play it down, but Cillian replies, “I’ll say this, It’s the best script I’ve ever read.that is sure”.
Any anxiety Murphy had about stepping up was eased when the director conveyed his complete confidence. After marveling at the script, Murphy confessed that it “added points to the terror he felt at the time. [Risas]but when it’s Christopher Nolan, you just have that confidence. You believe 100 percent in his vision, as I always have.. So it was terribly exciting.”
Something similar is what Florence Pugh thinks, who recently also praised her experience on the filming set with Nolan and Murphy, stating that “I’ve never seen that feeling of pride in a job well done on set before.. They were all incredibly well prepared. Each of the actors, regardless of the size of their role or the importance of her character in the story, each of them had enormous self-confidence”.
Based on the biographical novel ‘American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer’, written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, ‘Oppenheimer’ will hit theaters around the world on July 21, 2023.
