First images of Milena Smit and Hovik Keuchkerian in the sequel to ‘El Hoyo’, the most popular Spanish film in the history of Netflix

Total surprise, because Netflix has revealed today The first images of the filming of the sequel to ‘El Hoyo’ without us even knowing of the existence of this new installment. The long-awaited continuation of the most popular Spanish film in the history of Netflixwith 108,090,000 hours viewed in its first 28 days, still does not have an official title.

‘El Hoyo 2’ (we’ll call it that for now) will star Milena Smith (‘The Snow Girl’) and Hovik Keuchkerian (‘The paper house’), and it will be again directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, the creator of the original. The new film will be produced by Carlos Júarez, Gaztelu-Urrutia himself and Raquel Perea, from the Basque Films team.

“We started shooting the film full of illusion, wanting to extend the universe of ‘El Hoyo’ hand in hand with a plot full of surprises, obstacles, new characters… and old friends. We want this second installment to be an exciting physical journey that allows us to delve into the dark, into that place where we are afraid to look”, director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia commented from the set in the city of Bilbao.

‘El Hoyo’ was an international phenomenon on its way through Netflix after winning the Sitges Festival in 2019. Word of mouth expanded the film in such a way that it became the most watched Spanish film in the history of the platform. And speaking of platforms… This is how its synopsis read: “The future, in a dystopia. Two people per level. An unknown number of levels. A platform with food for all of them. Are you one of those who think too much when they are up? Or the kind that don’t have guts when they’re down? If you find out too late, you won’t get out of the Hole alive..”
