Miami positions itself as the new Silicon Valley

Miami, Florida’s innovation ecosystem has caught the attention of entrepreneurs, investors, and startups

The world’s best-known innovation and entrepreneurship hub is Silicon Valley. But that could change in the coming years. According to research conducted by techstar (2023), its influence is expected to decline over the next 5 years.

Silicon Valley was named by 63% of the report’s respondents as the most innovative center today. Yet, when asked which location will be the most innovative in the next 5 years, the percentage dropped to 45%.

Miami, on the other hand, is one of the cities that experts indicate as a new hub for the innovation of the future. According to Gonzalo Ferreyra, CRO of Online Applications, the United States is in a moment of axis change, as Miami is positioning itself as the new silicon valley in the country.

Historically, Miami has always been a point of reference in the US real estate and tourism market. But, with government incentives in recent years, the city has attracted the attention of entrepreneurs, startups and investors.

The mayor of the city, Francis Suarez, has been promoting Miami 2.0 since 2020. According to him, Miami 2.0 is a city based on the New Economy with a focus on technology. The decentralization movement in Silicon Valley began on the social network Twitter, from a tweet published by entrepreneur and director of the Founders Fund, Delian Asparouhov, on December 4, 2020. The publication read: “What if we change Silicon Valley to Miami”. The city’s mayor responded to the tweet by saying, “How can I help?”

But other than that, why Miami? Second CATO Institute, Florida was ranked as the US state with the most economic freedom. One of the kinks of Florida is that it doesn’t have a state income tax.

According to Gonzalo Ferreyra, “Miami has become a fantastic growth and networking opportunity for entrepreneurs and companies looking to internationalize.” Luiz Carlos Fernandes, International Projects Manager at Online Applications, also points out that Miami is an investor’s paradise.

Furthermore, Gonzalo Ferreyra points out that Miami has promoted internal migration to the United States. “That’s why we have a lot of entrepreneurs and startups moving to the city. This happens because of the low taxes and also because of the entrepreneurship that is developing there. It’s a strong competitor for Silicon Valley,” he adds.
