The mayor, Arthur Lira, has sent a request to the PGR to investigate the directors of Google and Telegram for acting contrary to Fake News PL
The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) has asked the Federal Court (STF) to open an investigation against the managers of the Google AND Telegram in Brazil for the attacks on Fake News PL. The bill 2.630/2020 provides for a series of obligations and sanctions social networks that do not act in the fight against disinformation and anti-democratic content.

The original request came from the mayor, Arthur Lira, who sent a document to the PGR with a request for verification. Lira said the two companies acted “forcefully and abusively” in lobbying against the approval of PL 2630/2020.

“Companies have resorted to all sorts of artifices in a sordid campaign of disinformation, manipulation and intimidation, taking advantage of their hegemonic position on the market,” said the MP in the document obtained by the Reuters agency.
The mayor said the mass message was misinformed and would overwhelm the House’s computer services. This happened because Telegram’s statement suggested users pressure MPs to vote against Fake News PL.
The attitude, according to Lira, constitutes a crime against democratic institutions, the consumerist order and the economy and relations with consumers. The lawmaker said his colleagues have received death threats and their social networks have been flooded with negative comments.
Survey mediated by PGR
The Public Prosecutor’s Office considered the arguments of the representative of the Chamber to be valid and forwarded the request to the STF, responsible for the investigations on the matter. The idea is to identify the participation of the executives of both companies in the creation of the positioning strategies.
The agency also requested testimony from the company’s directors. All posts, publications and messages must also be attached to the deeds, through an expert opinion.
The cases will be analyzed in secret by the STF under the tutelage of Moraes. The magistrate is responsible for investigating fake news and democratic acts.
There is no deadline to summon the directors of Google and Telegram. Furthermore, it is not known what the consequences of possible actions against the two companies will be.
What happened to Google and Telegram?
The order arrives two days after the Telegram sends a mass message to Brazilians talking about “dangers of the project” and an alleged attempt at “censorship”. OR the app deleted the message in sequenceafter being heavily criticized by the Brazilian authorities and forced to retract by order of STF minister Alexandre de Moraes.
The minister has established a fine and the suspension of services in case of inaction by Telegram. Moraes recalled that the conversation app is a repeat offender in failing to comply with judicial measures, such as when he refused to hand over data from neo-Nazi groups possibly involved in attacks on schools.
Last week, the The federal public ministry of São Paulo informed Google and Meta for company appeals against bill 2620/2022. The MPF asked the two companies if there had been any kind of change in search results or ad promotion that criticized the proposal.
