Niigata, Japan – Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddadwill hold a bilateral meeting this Friday 12 with the managing director of International Monetary Fund (IMF)Kristalina Georgieva. At the meeting, the minister intends to intercede for the Argentinawhich has a debt-leveraged economy with the potential to affect Brazil’s growth.

Haddad and Georgieva will meet on the banks of the D-7 Financial Summit to be held this week in Niigata, Japan. The Group of Seven consists of the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Canada and Japan. Brazil participates as a guest, as well as other emerging nations. The finance minister will participate in the three panels this Friday and, tomorrow, he will begin his return to Brazil.

Yesterday, in a bilateral meeting with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Haddad also spoke on behalf of Argentina. “The solution for Argentina is through the IMF,” the minister told reporters after the meeting.

The Brazilian intercession on behalf of the Argentine economy comes weeks after the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernándezvisit the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the Alvorada Palace. On this occasion, the petist pledged to work to get the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to ‘take the knife out of Argentina’s neck’.

In addition to the ideological identification, the Brazilian government wants to help Argentina in the field of the economy in an election year to avoid a decline in exports to the neighboring country which would lead to a weakening of national activity. The two countries are studying ways to finance exports to Argentina, but clash with the guarantee of the credit policy.

In addition to Georgieva, Haddad will also meet Japan’s finance minister and G-7 host this Friday, Shunichi Suzuki, and participates in the summit panels. The first of them dealt with the future of the welfare state and was led by Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Prize for Economicswith whom Haddad had a private meeting in the morning.

The second panel concerns the macroeconomy of emerging countries. The third has on the agenda the financing difficulties of the most diverse sectors of the economy, especially infrastructure.

Upon his arrival at the G-7 summit, Haddad had a private meeting with the finance minister of India, Nirmala Sitharama. The meeting is a further step in the G-20’s “change of baton”: next year Brazil will assume the presidency of the bloc, currently occupied by India.

Accompanying Haddad in his activities in Japan are the head of the Secretariat for International Financial Affairs, Tatiana Rosito, and special adviser Mathias Alencastro.
