‘Succession’ nears its final stretch and while we find out who gets Waystar Royco, we let Brian Cox pick the best scene from the series.
Someone needs to get Waystar Royco, the giant audiovisual conglomerate that stars in the brilliant HBO Max series, and while this is being decided, we find out that Brian Cox thinks people “didn’t understand” the best scene in ‘Succession’.
“That’s the greatness of[series creator]Jesse’s (Armstrong) writing, when you get a false idea of who someone is, and then, as an audience member, you have to stop and think,” says the actor. .
When we ask him to go deeper into that subject, he takes us to the eighth episode of the third season of which, for many, is already one of the best series in history.
“In season 3 there is this scene of Logan’s dinner with Kendall, his oldest son. Well the eldest of his first second family“, he explains. “They have this confrontation when they go to dinner. Kendall does that thing where the guy walks in with a plate of food, she hands it to Logan and then Kendall says, ‘oh, that’s not for him. This is for him’. And the reason Kendall does that is to make me think he’s trying to poison me.”
“And I know that’s what he’s doing. He’s making me believe he’s trying, not that I think he is“he explains. “Of course not, he doesn’t have the guts to poison me. He wouldn’t poison me in a million years, but he’s doing this show so I see what he’s doing. He is putting that on the table. He’s putting that plate on and he wants me to think he’s going to poison me. So okay, I’m going to take this improv a bit further. I will bring my grandson. Where is the? Oh he comes in. You love pasta? Would you taste my food?”
“And I’m doing it for him, to show you what a fucking idiot you are for going down that road and the public doesn’t get it“, he comments. “They think I’m about to poison my grandson. They don’t understand what their motivation is and all you have to do is watch the scene and you’ll see.. Oh I see. That’s what’s happening. And sometimes they just don’t get it.”
But ‘Succession’ comes to an end and, when we ask the actor with whom he is going to miss sharing a plane, he begins doubting: “I enjoy all the actors. I don’t have a favorite or one that I don’t like. I’ve had a great time good, working”.
“I love working with Jeremy Strong,” he ends up saying. “I’ve had great scenes with Jeremy Strong. You know, it’s Kendall, the scenes have always been so dense and juicy and great.”
“From a labor point of view, from the point of view of working conditions, they are the best working conditions I’ve had in years,” he adds later. “That is what I will miss, not the series, but working with my fellow actors and also with the crew.. We have a wonderful team in the camera department, the camera guys, the operators… they are unbeatable. When we do the show, and that’s what I love, we do a shot for the actors, we do this main shot, and then we do what we’ve called a free shot so we can do whatever we want. But we also make one for the operators. We do it so the operators can do what they want to do and it’s very creative, they do some wonderful things, those subtle things, delicate things.”
