Netflix horror will make you nauseous; do you have courage?

Fans of the horror genre, beware, this is not a workout: there is a film on Netflix that needs your evaluation, since, according to foreign media, the production has even caused nausea in viewers. We are talking about The Monastery (hellin English), Polish feature film released in October 2022 on the platform, but only now discovered by users and driven by the streaming algorithm.

Directed by Bartosz M. Kowalski, The Monastery is set in 1987 and follows an undercover police officer (Piotr Zurawski) tasked with finding out what happened to seven missing women on the grounds of a monastery. Disguised as a monk for camouflage, he soon discovers that the case may be more than he can handle – or literally swallow!

In short (and trying not to make spoilers so as not to spoil the surprise of those who want to go see the film), the plot focuses on exorcisms, possessions, supernatural phenomena, mysteries, fears, blood (almost a trashy style) and the cause of nausea : strong scenes with very suspicious foods.

Second collider, film critics and viewers shared their impressions on Twitter. For some the film is complex and “breaks a hole in the brain”, for others the message is: don’t watch it while you eat.

For the Imported horror podcastthe feature film is a psychological, body and food terror, being a haunting cinematic production that reinforces the fact that all people are doomed, no matter who or where.

The analyzes also underline this The Monastery it’s not the kind of movie where you have a pause scene, one where you breathe in intervals of suspense. It also seems to have no hope for the characters – just when you think you have it, there’s a plot twistit changes everything for you. So, are you going to tackle it?
