After Celine Shyama’s 2019 Portrait of a Young Girl and Catherine Corsin’s La La Fracture in 2021, the Pakistani film Joyland is the winner of the 2022 Queer Palm.
The day before the official selection jury awards, Queer Palm will reveal its winners. These prizes distinguish films that best deal with homosexual, bisexual, transgender, or “queer” themes from selected skin films, that is, they offer subjects and characters who break gender codes and give a different perspective.
After Portrait of a Young Girl in Fire in 2019 and La Fracture in 2021, two films stood out among the 17 feature and 12 short films:
Joyland Square: Lahore, Haider and his wife live with their brother’s entire family. In this house, where everyone lives under the watchful eye, Haider is asked to find a job and become a father. On the day he finds a small job in a cabaret, he falls under the spell of the sensible and magnetic dancer Biba. Before feelings arise, Haider finds himself torn between commands that aggravate him and an irresistible call for freedom. Release: Coming soon.
