Santos Stadium: Nova Vila Belmiro is about to be put on paper, but the residents of the region are against it

Peixe held a meeting with WTorre to address the matter last week

Santos held a meeting with WTorre, the company responsible for the works at Vila Belmiro, last week to discuss the renovation of the stadium. The parties strengthened their engagement and monitoring of the construction program and made significant progress.

Although some topics of the meeting are kept confidential, the LANCE! he found that the conversations had a positive tone, the details were defined and the new Santos house could be very close to becoming a reality.

After the match, WTorre representatives stayed in Vila to watch Santos vs. Bahia clash, match in which Peixe beat their opponent 3-0, for Brasileirão. Internally, the attitude was considered symbolic and important, not least because all members of the company’s upper class were present.

There is still no exact date for the start of the works. However, the Sao Paulo coast club works with the projection that it will start in the first half of 2024. Initially, president Andres Rueda wanted construction to get underway in the last leg of his term, which ends at the end of this year Belmiro (Photo: Disclosure/Santos FC)

THE NEW STADIUM AND WHERE SANTOS WILL PLAY DURING THE WORK

The new Vila Belmiro will have the capacity to receive around 30,108 people. This is practically double the current reality, as the stadium has 16,068 seats.

The deal between Santos and WTorre is similar to the one between Palmeiras and the company, which runs Allianz Parque, a Palestrina home. Peixe retains ownership of the land and does not pay for the renovation. In return, the real estate company keeps the concession and becomes responsible for the management of the stadium for 30 years. WTorre is estimated to spend around BRL 300 million on the project.

The work would take about two years to complete. In this period, Peixe’s idea is to use Canindé as a temporary venue, if the stadium has the necessary structural conditions. Another possibility is the new Pacaembu, which is due to reopen in 2024. This is the trend, but the hammer has not yet been struck.

THE RESIDENTS OF THE REGION ARE AGAINST

The people who live in the Vila Belmiro neighborhood are against the reform. The main concerns are: the depreciation of real estate in the region, security and disturbance due to concerts and large events. The guarantor is Gilberto Coelho, representative of the Sociedade de Melhoramentos Amigos e Moradores da Vila Belmiro, in contact with L!.

– At first the majority (of the residents) is against it. Our Village is 113 years old. Most of the houses around are old, so one of the residents’ concerns is when to start renovating, as it will depreciate the property and no one will want to live around it. The concern is for safety: the houses are old and they can demolish, break, start to crack, as sometimes happens in buildings, when the surrounding house starts to feel the impact, because Santos (city) is all sand. Also, there is devaluation. In three or four years the disturbance with the concerts will begin and, finally, they will call someone international. How will it stay there? – he said. JUSTICE AT A STOP?

According to Gilberto Coelho, some residents comment on the possibility of calling the Public Prosecutor’s Office and pursuing the case.

– Many have already talked about asking for a public hearing, going to the Public Prosecutor’s Office… In particular, I don’t know if anyone is doing it, but there is a lot of talk. So their fear is great, I don’t know if anyone started doing this, but they also talked about a petition and everything. We have no support, we don’t know what will be done and how it will impact. Santos said nothing, the surrounding population doesn’t know. He wasn’t sitting at the table (to get the project exposed). That’s what scares the population, he doesn’t know what’s going to happen from now on,” he said.

THE THING! found that Santos is unaware of such dissatisfaction with the renovations at Vila Belmiro.
