Super Mario Bros becomes the fifth greatest animation in history

Super Mario Bros. Film, the film adaptation of the famous Nintendo games, continues to collect records. After grossing over $1.2 billion worldwide, making it the 24th highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, it has now earned the title of the fifth highest-grossing animated film in history.

Super Mario Bros. Film debuted in early April and remained at the top of the cinema sessions for four weekends in a row – it was dethroned with the arrival of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

According to the report of collider, Super Mario it is also the biggest video game adaptation, the biggest film of 2023, being the first of the year to reach $1 billion at the box office, and the second biggest domestic release in Universal Pictures history, behind only Jurassic world.

Super Mario Bros. Film

Produced by Universal, Illumination and Nintendo, Super Mario Bros. Film spent decades in development. Part of the delay was due to Nintendo’s hesitation in bringing Mushroom Kingdom back to the big screen after the 1993 live-action adaptation failed, considered one of the worst productions ever made.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the animation features a voice cast consisting of Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black. The film had a production budget of $100 million, which is considered cheap for an animation. Pixar and Disney movies, for example, usually cost twice as much.

Super Mario Bros. Film is still playing in Brazilian theaters, however, the feature film has also already earned a date for its streaming debut. Check it out here!
