In the southern suburbs of Boston, Will Hunting is a young man who drinks beer with his friends, starts fights in bars, rejects all forms of authority… and solves math exercises that control the smartest. MIT students.
A true genius capable of assimilating as much knowledge as he can absorb books, Will still adamantly refuses to tap into his potential, until the day a prominent math professor rescues him from prison and takes him under his wing. Gus Van Sant’s feature film, released in 1998, is largely orchestrated between Will Hunting, played by Matt Damon early in his career, and his therapist, played by goldsmith Robin Williams.
These verbal passages – based on the contrast between the sharp intelligence of the talented young man and the absolute sincerity of his interlocutor – reach their highest point at the end of the film, in a moving sequence that you will not forget if you have already seen it. In the final session with Dr. Maguire, which is in the final moments of the feature film, Will tells him that he has just broken up with his girlfriend, and two men who both beat him as children are causing their injuries. .
“Hey, Will! I don’t know much, but you see that? All this shit? It’s not your fault”– declares the psychologist and looks directly into the eyes of the young man.
“It’s not your fault”He repeats it tirelessly, and Will, who at first reflects on the casualness, gradually becomes defensive and even threatens violence, before breaking down in tears in Shawn’s arms.
This scene, which will no doubt be remembered by many viewers as the most exciting in the film, is also one of the most beautiful to be found in Robin Williams’ entire career (which is saying something) and also allows young Matt. Damon to show his talent. It is to the latter (as well as to his friend Ben Affleck, who is also involved in the casting) that we owe the film’s excellent script.
