According to the police, all the victims of the massacre were involved in drug trafficking, whether they were drug dealers or users.
The State Department of Drug Enforcement (Denarc) Civil Police confirmed that Sunday’s shooting in the Sarandi neighborhood, which left five dead and five injured, could be linked to the death of a drug dealer known as ‘Beto Fanho’, named as one of the leaders of drug trafficking in the north of Porto Alegre. The information comes from Rádio Guaíba.
Police are investigating whether the attack was carried out by other traffickers, in an attempt to take control of the area after the previous leader’s death during a security operation in Gravataí, metropolitan region. The criminals arrived with two cars in Rua B, in Vila São Borja, shot the ten victims and fled. According to investigations, the region is known as a hotspot for narcotics.
According to the police, all the victims of the massacre were involved in drug trafficking, whether they were drug dealers or users. The crime was committed in an area of factional dispute.
Beto Fanho
Beto Fanho was killed during a joint operation by the Civil Police and the Military Brigade on a farm in the Morungava region. He had been indicted seven times for murder, as well as being involved in drug dealing and bank robberies. He has accumulated 53 years of his sentence for his crimes. A variety of weapons were seized during the operation, including rifles, pistols, shotguns, grenades, bulletproof vests, cash and radio communicators. Over the next few days, five people were arrested as they tried to unearth more weapons hidden on the property.
Although Beto Fanho was the head of drug trafficking in the Sarandi area, he also had ties to a faction originating from Vila 27, in Vila Cruzeiro, in the south. At the time of his death, however, he was associated with a group formed at Presidio Central in the 1990s that describes itself as “open” to alliances with other factions. Both gangs associated with Beto Fanho are part of a coalition of drug dealers that banded together to fight a larger criminal organization that originated in the Bom Jesus neighborhood in east Porto Alegre.
