Israel says the other three bodies received from Gaza do not match those of the dead hostages

The three unidentified bodies from Gaza, delivered to Israel on Friday night through the Red Cross, are not those of the hostages kidnapped on October 7, 2023 by Hamas, an Israeli army spokesperson told AFP on Saturday (1).

The three unidentified bodies from Gaza, delivered to Israel on Friday night through the Red Cross, are not those of the hostages kidnapped on October 7, 2023 by Hamas, an Israeli army spokesperson told AFP on Saturday (1).

A military source had already made it known on Friday evening, when the bodies were handed over, that he did not believe they were hostages.

To date, the Palestinian Islamic movement has returned the remains of 17 of the 28 deceased hostages it had agreed to hand over under a truce agreement negotiated by the United States with Israel.

Among the 17 bodies returned are those of 15 Israelis, one Thai and one Nepalese.

Under the terms of the ceasefire agreement negotiated under the mediation of the United States, for every Israeli returnee, Israel handed over 15 bodies of Palestinians killed during the war, for a total of 225 bodies.

After the ceasefire began, Hamas released the last 20 surviving hostages it was still holding captive and began the process of returning the bodies of the deceased hostages.

Delays

Subsequent delays in the delivery of the bodies angered the Israeli government, which accused Hamas of violating the truce agreement. The families of the hostages also called for tougher measures to force the Palestinian group to respect the agreement.

Ten bodies of hostages from October 7 are still found in Gaza, as well as the body of a soldier killed during the 2014 war. All the victims are Israeli, except one Tanzanian and one Thai.

At the same time, Israel has carried out two massive bombings of Gaza since October 10, in response to gunfire that killed three Israeli soldiers. According to Palestinian sources, the attacks on October 19 caused the death of at least 45 people, while those on Tuesday claimed 104 victims.

Hamas, which denies firing on Israeli soldiers, accused Israel of violating the ceasefire.
