First World: The remake of this iconic action film will have two different… and competing sequels!

Released in 2024 and directed by Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Edge of Tomorrow), Road House was a huge success on Amazon Prime, racking up nearly 50 million views worldwide in just two weeks. So it’s no surprise that a sequel, which is currently being filmed, has begun.

Except Amazon Prime isn’t alone in this, as, in a unique case in Hollywood franchise history, another sequel (of the same movie!) is currently being developed by rival studios. How is this possible?

Director vs. Studio

When Doug Liman was hired to direct the remake of the cult film Road House with Patrick Swayze, he agreed because the project was expected (he was told) to be released in theaters. Problem, the Jake Gyllenhaal version of Road House is finally streaming on Prime Video. It is enough to anger the director, who called for a boycott of his own film!

The Road House 1989 version had an official sequel, with Doug Liman then secretly acquiring the rights to remake it to sidestep Amazon’s plan to release Road House 2024 as a franchise.

Two suites for the price of one

Called Road House: Dylan, this script by Doug Liman isn’t what Amazon started, who then decided to create an original sequel to the Road House story. Currently shooting, the sequel is directed by Ilya Naishuler alongside Dave Bautista, Aldis Hodge and Leila George.

Thus, we find ourselves with two competing sequels to the same film. A completely ridiculous situation, made possible by the many lawsuits still going on regarding the copyrights of the Road House franchise. We’ll spare you the details, but the screenwriter of the original film is contesting Amazon’s right to make his film, in short, due to legal status. These are all legal misunderstandings that are not ready to be resolved.

While waiting for a double ration of sequels, you can always (re)discover Road House with Jake Gyllenhaal on Amazon Prime.
