Took a long time to watch White People Can’t Jump on Disney+! Announced in 2017, this remake is written by Kenya Barris, the talented screenwriter of the sitcom Black-ish (recently made into the Netflix movie You People).
THE Original movie Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes as Billy Hoyle and Sidney Dean, two crooks who participate in street basketball games. Taking advantage of prejudices about Billy’s white skin color, the two partners manipulate their opponents to pocket the money that is put into each game.
Comedy and basketball were a winning combination in the early ’90s buddy movie, written and directed by Ron Shelton, himself a former professional minor league baseball player turned filmmaker.
The new version of The Whites Can’t Jump is from Calmatic (real name Charles Kidd III), a director known for his music videos and commercials.
A remake that takes liberties with the original film
On the casting side, rapper Jack Harlow replaces Woody Harrelson, and Sinqua Walls plays Wesley Snipes. Also note the late Lance Reddick’s further involvement in a supporting role.
Note that this remake takes a lot of liberties with the original work, the plot of which is taken extensively, and many changes have been made to the script, starting with the main characters – whose names have been changed. – which are completely rewritten.
So don’t expect a true copy of Ron Shelton’s film, on the contrary, and it’s a safe bet that this new version will be completely rooted in its time in a way that the original feature film is still considered a perfectly representative film. Early 90s state of mind!
The new version of the cult film White People Can’t Jump is available now on Disney+.
