Palmeiras x Fortaleza brings together the longest serving coaches in the country; stay up to date with everything that is in the game

The duel between Palmeiras and Fortaleza, at the Allianz Parque, will bring together – in a single ‘blow’ – the longest-lived works in Brazil and the only two clubs still unbeaten in this edition of Série A of the Brazilian championship. The stage is big: the first leg of the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil. The numbers, therefore, accompany the special occasion.

The 19 o’clock match (from Brasilia) this Wednesday (17) puts a lot on the line. In addition to the elimination nature over 180 minutes – the real decision will be on May 31, under the command of Fortaleza -, Verdão and Leão do Pici will also face each other in the figure of their respective coaches.

Abel Ferreira took over Alviverde on October 30, 2020, 929 days ago – two years, six months and 19 days, if you prefer. Juan Pablo Vojvoda, in turn, assumed the technical command of Fortaleza on May 4, 2021: there are 743 days (two years and 13 days) in office.

Verdão’s overall numbers favor the Palestinian club. Although they have never faced each other for the Copa do Brasil – an unprecedented confrontation, therefore – Palmeiras and Fortaleza have already dueled 19 times. There are eight victories for Alviverde, five draws and six triumphs for Leão do Pici. In total, Palmeiras scored 41 goals and conceded 19.

Two of those matches were even knockout matches. In the final of the Brasileirão 1960, Palmeiras won twice: 3-1 in Ceará and 8-2 in Pacaembu, in a match that marked the biggest defeat in the history of the competition.

Now it only remains to be seen whether the statistical support will, in fact, help Abel Ferreira deal with one of his biggest ‘stones in his shoe’ during his stay in Brazil.
