Watching a series 60 times: The price fans pay for Netflix not to cancel their favorite show

All to save Shadow and Bones.

We already know that Netflix has a somewhat controversial series cancellation policy. It happened recently with 1899, the series created by the same people behind Dark and whose fans didn’t expect that, after being in the top 10 most watched series, it would finally be canceled after just one season by that unexpected final hook.

And the streaming giant’s subscribers don’t want that to happen again with Sombra and Ossos. With the release of the second season, fans of Grishaverse they can’t wait for the series to be renewed for a third installment and have employed a few tactics to secure that renewal:

We had to find something to keep the fandom going,” account owner @flawlques explains in an interview with Rolling Stone. “Netflix is a very unstable streaming service. You never know if your favorite show will be renewed or canceled and we’ve always had this question. So from day one, we did our best.

After the second of eight episodes premiered, fans watched the entire series (including Season 1) several times a week in an effort to maintain Shadow and bone among the 10 most watched series on Netflix.

Other fans have hosted viewing parties on social media, while others have kept the series on the back burner as a way to boost viewing hours. A fan named Holly, 18, told Rolling Stone she has watched the show about 60 times.

However, as of writing, the series has yet to be renewed for a third season, despite its creator stating that a spinoff is in the works. And this isn’t the first time the series has been saved this way. This has already happened with Sense8 in 2018.

Lana Wachowski encouraged fans of the show to rewatch the entire series in December so it could be renewed for a third season:

Let’s just say Netflix is an unpredictable company. They really care about the artists they work with, the series they produce, and probably most importantly, they listen to their subscribers. Proving time and time again that it’s not just an algorithm driven company.

However, Sense8 was never renewed for a third season. But there was a movie to wrap up the story.
