Now that coulrophobes the world over have fallen asleep, it’s finally time to discover it: Welcome to Derry, the (very) free adaptation of the world of undisputed horror master Stephen King. And we won’t hide from you that we started the first episodes with some doubts, because King’s adaptations have become ordinary, and for the results… often quite average.
But Uncover would happily recommend you check out this new series, which has managed to recapture what was at the heart of the novel to bring it fresh and respectful to the original! Such a successful adaptation, of course, does not happen every day!
what are you talking about
Welcome to Derry is set in 1962, 27 years before the events of It: Chapter One. The series immerses us in the terrifying history of a town haunted by Pennywise, inspired by Stephen King’s original novel The Interludes – disturbing stories and historical tragedies that Mike Hanlon’s character explores as an adult.
A Stranger Things competitor?
The corner chosen to immerse yourself in this new history of the city should remind you of something. A group of young college students fighting “space” forces in a small town that also happens to be a military base… it all clearly reminds me of the series created by Matt and Ross Duffer: Strangers Things. And we think that’s the goal.
Indeed, it’s hard to imagine HBO not trying to recapture the juicy “nostalgic horror series” market, even though Strangers Things is coming to an end in two short months. So the bridges between the two series are obvious from the start, except that Welcome to Derry openly takes a much (much) more pronounced horror approach. To summarize and without spoiling anything, Welcome to Derry is an uncensored version of Strangers Things, not recommended for under 18s…
We can’t wait for you to discover the first episodes and come talk to us about them on Allociné! This: Welcome to Derry is available on HBO Max with an episode every Monday.
