Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said on Wednesday that it is natural for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to make appointments to the Central Bank in accordance with what he considers best for the country, but stressed that, after being appointed, the administrators accountable to the CB itself and to the National Monetary Council, and not to the president.
In a joint hearing of committees in the Chamber of Deputies, Haddad also said that the discussion of falling interest rates is ongoing around the world and is normal in democracies, and should not be seen as an “offence”.
