TRF1 orders defense witnesses to testify in the case of Bruno and Dom

The accused murderer will have to testify again

The fourth panel of the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region (TRF1) decided this Tuesday (16) to accept, in part, a habeas corpus for the defense of the three accused of the murder of the indigenist Bruno Pereira and the British journalist Dom Phillips, killed in June last year in an ambush in the Amazon region.

According to the decision, the testimonies of the defendants Amarildo da Costa Oliveira, Oseney da Costa Oliveira and Jefferson da Silva Lima, heard last week in the hearing, must be canceled and collected again.

The witnesses of the defense must also be heard, the TRF1 determined after the judge Fabiano Verli, responsible for the first instance case, denied the hearings.

In testimony last week, the defendants returned to the confession they had made to the police and began to support a version according to which they were acting in self-defense. It was the first time that the three appeared before the judge.

With the TRF1 sentence, the possibility remains open for the defense and the prosecution to request new steps, such as the collection of documents, the issuance of official letters and the request for information.

At the end of the investigation of the criminal action, the parties to the proceeding have the opportunity to present their concluding arguments. Then, the responsible judge must decide whether the case will go to a jury. There is no deadline for this decision.

Historical

The correspondent of the British newspaper The Guardian and the indigenist were executed in June 2022. They worked together to expose socio-environmental crimes in the Vale do Javari region, where there is the highest concentration of isolated and recently contacted people in the world.

Dom Phillips even intended to publish a book on issues affecting the area and was investigating the information at the time. In the Vale do Javari Indigenous Land there are 64 villages of 26 people, with approximately 6,300 people.

The police authorities have placed at least eight people under suspicion, for their possible participation in the murders and in the concealment of the bodies. At the end of October 2022, the alleged mastermind of the murder, Rubens Villar Pereira, was released on bail after posting R $ 15,000 bail.
