Champagne and shoes: Titanic wins 3D images with details of the ship

The analysis was conducted by Magellan, a deep-sea mapping company, and Atlantic Productions, which prepares a documentary

OR most famous shipwreck in the world had new revelations. The wreck of Titanic has undergone a full-size digital scan. The vessel is 3,800 meters deep in the Atlantic and was studied using a deep sea mapping system.

The project includes a 3D view only one of the entire ship, allowing it to be seen as if the water had been drained. The expectation is that this study will bring new insight into what exactly happened to the ocean liner, which sank in 1912.

More than 1,500 people died when the ship hit a iceberg on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The tragedy inspired films that gave even more exposure to the incident.

“There are still questions, basic questions, that need to be answered about the ship,” Titanic Parks analyst Stephenson told the BBC in an interview.

He said this model was “one of the first big steps in bringing the Titanic story to evidence-based research, not speculation.”

How the “rescan” was done.

The new scan captures the wreck in its entirety, revealing a complete view of the Titanic. The ship is in two parts, with bow and stern separated by about 800 meters. A huge debris field surrounds the wrecked ship.

The analysis was conducted in mid-2022 by Magellan, a deep-sea mapping company, and Atlantic Productions, which is making a documentary about the project.

The submersibles, remotely controlled by a team aboard a specialized vessel, spent more than 200 hours surveying the length and breadth of the wreck.

They took over 700,000 images from all angles, creating an exact 3D reconstruction.

New scan captures the sinking of the Titanic in its entirety

Magellan’s Gerhard Seiffert, who led planning for the expedition, told the BBC this was the largest underwater scanning project he has ever undertaken.

“Its depth, almost 4,000 meters, presents a challenge, and there are also currents going on – and we can’t touch anything so as not to damage the wreck,” he explained.

“And the other challenge is that you have to map every square inch – even the uninteresting parts, like in the debris field, you have to map the mud, but you need it to fill in all these interesting objects.”

The scan shows both the scale of the vessel and minute details, such as the serial number on one of the propellers.

The bow, now covered in rust, is still instantly recognizable 100 years after the wreck. At the top is the boat deck, where an open hole reveals a void where the grand staircase once stood.

The stern, however, is a chaotic mess of metal. This part of the ship collapsed as she sank to the bottom of the sea.

In the surrounding debris field, objects are scattered, including decorated metal parts of the ship, statues and unopened champagne bottles. There are also personal items, including dozens of shoes resting on the sediment.

Parks Stephenson, who has studied the Titanic for many years, said he was “stunned” when he first saw the footage.

“It lets you see the wreck like you’d never see it from a submersible, and you can see the wreck in its entirety, you can see it in context and perspective. And what it’s showing now is the true state of the wreck.” he told the BBC.

He said studying the images could offer new insight into what happened to the Titanic on that fateful night in 1912.

“We don’t really understand the nature of the collision with the iceberg. We don’t even know if it hit the starboard side, as shown in all the movies – it could have run aground on the iceberg,” he explained.

Studying the stern, he added, could reveal the mechanics of how the vessel hit the seabed.

The sea is putting a strain on the wreck, the microbes are devouring it and the pieces are crumbling. Historians are well aware that time is running out to fully understand the maritime disaster.

But the sweep will now freeze the wreck in time and allow experts to scrutinize every detail.
