Tom Hanks says AI could help immortalize Hollywood careers

Tom Hanks, actor known for such iconic films as Thrown away AND Forrest Gumpsaid in an interview with The Adam Buxton Podcast that his career can continue after his death through artificial intelligence.

The actor believes that technology can provide an opportunity to beat time and preserve the legacy of artists.

Anyone can now recreate themselves at any age through artificial intelligence or deep fake technology… I could get hit by a bus tomorrow and that’s it, but my performances can go on indefinitely. Short of realizing it was done by AI or deepfake, there will be nothing to tell you it’s not me.

Despite the benefit of continuing his career, the actor discovers that technologies can play a version of himself that would not choose to appear in films.

According to Hanks, there are ongoing conversations about how the film industry should protect actors from the effects of technology.

I can tell you that there are discussions going on in every association, every agency and every law firm to find the legal ramifications of my face and voice and that all others are our intellectual property.

In the movie Here, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright will use AI technology from the company Metaphysic to rejuvenate actors on screen. The company is known for creating Tom Cruise deepfakes and reality show renditions. America’s Got talent.

The intention is for the technology to be used “extensively” in the film to generate facial replacements for Hanks, Wright and other actors.

Here, directed by Robert Zemeckis, is an adaptation of Richard McGuire’s graphic novel set in a single room. The film is scheduled for release in 2024.
