Brazil is the main target of DDoS attacks in Latin America

Denial of Service scams, which disable websites and services, grew 19% at the end of 2022; Brazil concentrates 39% of the attack volume in Latin America

Brazil once again leads the Latin American ranking of denial of service attacks, aimed at taking websites and services offline under a gigantic volume of accesses. In the second half of last year there was a 19% increase in scams in this category, with our country receiving 39.2% of all episodes of this type recorded in the area.

The numbers are from the cybersecurity company Netscout and show a total of more than 727,600 occurrences detected between July and December 2022. The growth compared to the first half of last year also accompanies an increase in the power of these attacks, with an average duration of 16 minutes and movement of 288.1 GB per second.

The telecommunications sectors were the hardest hit by distributed denial of service (DDoS) scams, followed by data processing companies and insurance brokers. While records for Latin America track the global average, the rate of increase in this part of the world is slower, with attacks growing 13% globally in the second half of 2022.

The exception was recorded in the United States, where the war between Russia and Ukraine was widely reflected. Although the armed conflict is taking place on the other side of the world, there has been a 16.8% increase in DDoS scams registered in the United States alone, the country with the highest individual increase; attention shifts there too, with the national security sector being the hardest hit.

Although Brazil is the main target of denial of service scams in Latin America, it was Ecuador that recorded the most serious incident. In August 2022, the public sector of the country was attacked with a maximum bandwidth of more than 572 Gbps, with a flow of 167.7 Mpps from different data carriers.

Security efforts need to be greater in Brazil

Not all is tragedy in the Netscout report. While signaling the trend of Brazil to continue to be the main target of DDoS scams in Latin America, the company also highlights the concern for greater protection from this part of the world, even if the obstacles are still great, especially in terms of lack of professionalism and corporate maturity in understanding safety issues.

“We have a very good infrastructure sector, [desenvolvido] starting from the 2000s with the privatization of the sector, which guaranteed rapid evolution and galloping technological growth”, says Geraldo Guazzelli, general manager of Netscout. speed of this digital transformation.”

The executive cites the presence of strong institutions, such as the regional FATECs, the INPE (National Institute for Space Research) and the ITA (Technological Institute for Aeronautics) as references, alongside the private sector. However, something is still missing. “We need government attention and planning so that Brazil balances agricultural potential with technological output,” he adds.

Until then, however, the number of successful attacks should continue to grow. In addition to being the main target of denial of service attacks in Latin America, Brazil has also recently registered two brands related to cybercrime, appearing as the country with the most leaked credentials in 2022 and also the second most affected by ransomware scamssecond only to the USA.
