Its name evokes the famous Japanese meat skewers, but not yakitori: the soldiers of misfortune do not reflect its action in the world of gastronomy! In contrast, Netflix’s new Japanese animated series is a futuristic series that pits elite soldiers against alien enemies.
With its plot, or with the general look of the series in general, there is no doubt that Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers was one of the main inspirations for this anime adaptation. Light novels Written by Carlo Zeni (Short novels written for a teenage audience, mostly with lots of illustrations – these books are usually considered a cross between a traditional novel and manga Editor’s note).
Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune is an anime series aimed at mature audiences due to its many fight scenes (although we weren’t told how violent the show was).
Its CG animation is produced by newcomer studio Arect, and the anime is directed by Hideaki Anboa with a soundtrack composed by renowned DJ Ken Ishii.
The broadcast of this new anime confirms Netflix’s interest in the Japanese animation market. The first images of Yakitori: Soldiers of Misery were also unveiled at the AnimeJapan 2023 convention, alongside other titles expected on the platform such as Pluto and Onmyoji.
During this convention, Content Director Yuji Yamano mentioned that almost one in two subscribers regularly consumes Japanese animated content on Netflix, or about 100 million users in total!
