“Take me. Choose me. Love me”… did you notice the parallel to one of the iconic lines of Grey’s Anatomy in Ellen Pompeo’s last episode?

For over 19 years now, Grey’s Anatomy fans have passionately followed Meredith Grey’s heartfelt stories. And all these years, the character played by Ellen Pompeo went through a lot of heartbreak until she walked away from the Gray Sloan memorial, which takes place in episode 7 of season 19, which airs this Wednesday, May 17 on TF1.

And to give this iconic character a name-worthy farewell, the writers decided to give a little nod to the iconic Meredith. did you notice

“Take me. Choose me. Love me”

In season 19, Meredith began an affair with Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman). But the doctor’s decision to move to Boston to start Alzheimer’s research and help his daughter Zola (Aniella Gumbs) deal with anxiety attacks puts a strain on this budding relationship.

In episode 7, Nick, struggling with this decision, decides to confront his girlfriend and try to understand why Meredith doesn’t seem inclined to try to continue the relationship. That’s when he launches into a quip that will surely remind fans of the first hour.

I’m a grown woman with a big life, a big career and three kids. This step is what my daughter needs“, he said.I want you to be a part of my life if you want. But if I have to choose, I will. I choose my children and I choose what is best for us. I’m not asking you to love me.”

Doesn’t that bring back memories? In Grey’s Anatomy Season 2 Episode 5, Meredith actually said something similar to Derek, who she was in a relationship with. At that time, the latter had to choose between starting a new life with a young intern or trying to save her marriage to Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh).

As the two prepare for surgery, Meredith gives a speech to convince Derek to choose her. And the words he used then are reminiscent of the words he used in Season 19.

Our story is not over yet. I do not want. I don’t want to and it’s humiliating because I’m here begging– he said with tears in his eyes. “That’s it, your choice is very simple: it’s him or me. And I’m sure she’s really great, but Derek, I love you… so take me. Choose me. love me.”

These two decisive moments in Meredith’s life and, above all, the parallels in the lines, first of all show the evolution of the character, who is no longer a young girl in love who is ready to give up everything for a man, but a woman who puts her and her children’s happiness before others. A nice nod to the writers bidding Ellen Pompeo a farewell that won’t come as a surprise to Grey’s Anatomy fans.

Catch new episodes of Grey’s Anatomy every Wednesday from 9.10pm on TF1. Previous seasons are available in their entirety on Disney+.
