Who was Jacqueline Avant?
In March 1940, Jacqueline Avant was born in New York City, a philanthropist who began her career working as a hospital technician and phlebotomist and who later became a model.
She met her husband, Clarence Avant, while her modeling career was starting to take off. Known as “The Black Godfather,” the music producer was instrumental in promoting black artists in the 1970s and 80s.
In 1967, the newlyweds moved to Beverly Hills, a county in Los Angeles, California, at the time they were one of the few black families living in the area. Over the years, the couple had two children, Nicole and Alexander Du Bois Avant.

Jacqueline Avant became a very active philanthropist, serving as president of the Watts Neighborhood, a group that organized fundraisers for children in South Los Angeles, and enjoyed celebrity support at the time. As Avant advanced in philanthropy, her husband continued to secure his role as an executive and mentor in the music industry.
Why Avant was honored at Queen Charlotte?
Jacqueline Avant’s connection to Netflix stems from her daughter, Nicole, who is married to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos.
Shonda Rhimes, the series producer, revealed that Avant was a big inspiration for the Queen Charlotte because of Sarandos, who told Rhimes that her mother-in-law was obsessed with Charlotte’s royal story and even owned one of the Queen’s letters.

Sadly, Jacqueline Avant, 81, was shot and killed during a home invasion in December 2021. Her husband was present during the attack and held his wife until officers arrived on the scene, they have been married for 54 years. Jacqueline died on her way to the hospital.
Her killer, who also injured an unarmed security guard during the robbery, pleaded guilty to the murder and was convicted of second-degree murder and other charges. He was sentenced to 190 years in prison and is not eligible for parole.
After Avant’s death, her family founded the Jacqueline Avant Children and Family Center to continue her social work in South Los Angeles.
