Apple should invest in micro LED screens to replace OLED on iPhone

Rumor indicates that Apple should increase investment in micro LED screens, aiming to use the technology on iPhone and reduce reliance on Samsung

apple should replace the iPhone’s OLED screens with a micro LED one, similar to what you see in larger panels like the Recently launched R$1 million TV for the SAMSUNG in Brazil. At least that’s what the new information from Asia indicates.

Rumors that Apple is working to be self-sufficient in many components of its products are not new, to avoid the need to buy technology from other companies.

Now, the Nikkei Asia portal has brought the news, stating that one of Apple’s intentions is indeed to reduce the current dependence on the technology from its main rival, Samsung, makers of a large part of the OLED screens used in the iPhone.

Apple has allegedly invested at least 1 billion dollars, almost 5 billion reais, in research and development over the last decade. The teams involved, presumably, would be those from Japan, Taiwan and the United States, which would deal with the integrated circuits of the LED micro screens, as well as the production of the panel itself.

For the uninitiated, micro LED technology allows for the placement of thousands of individual pixels that are capable of self-illumination, promoting higher contrast and more advanced black levels. These are the same characteristics as OLED, but with the difference that it is not an organic material like that used in OLED, avoiding the dreaded burn-in. Furthermore, it would also be possible to add other sensors to the display, making them even more precise.

Other rumors, however, have already said that the arrival of technology on the iPhone could take some time, with the brand studying the feasibility of making it available first in a future Apple Watch Ultra in 2025, and then on select iPad models in 2026.
