Two Brazilians will be ‘venerable’ of the Catholic Church

The Pope announces that the priest killed by the Nazis will be blessed

Pope Francis has authorized the promulgation of the decree that will make the Brazilian nun Tereza Margarida do Coração de Maria and the layman Guido Vidal França Schäffer venerable of the Catholic Church this Saturday, as well as six other people (20).

In addition to them, the Italian priest Giuseppe Beotti, killed by the Nazis for “hating his faith” in 1944, will be beatified as a Catholic – a step towards sainthood. The decrees were announced by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.

The nun from Minas Gerais is next to another nun, the Italian Edda Roda. The young seminarian joins three other lay people: the Italian catechist Arnaldo Canepa and the Italians Maria Cristina Ogier and Lorena D’Alessandro. Two priests will also receive the title: Simon Mpeke from Cameroon and Pedro de la Virgen del Carmen from Spain.

Born Maria Luíza (1915-2005), the nun became known as Sister Tereza and led the founding of a Carmel in the diocese of Campanha, having worked at the institution for several years. The monastery became a point of reference for the Catholics of the region, and the religious has always had a reputation for holiness.

Schäffer, himself a seminarian, doctor and surfer from Rio de Janeiro, died at the age of just 34, in 2009. He was involved in health care for the poor assisted by the Missionary Sisters of Charity. He had decided to drop everything to pursue a priestly career.

The title of Venerable is the second of the Catholic Church after Servant of God. After obtaining recognition, the confirmation of miracles is needed to advance until she becomes Blessed and subsequently canonized. .
