ANALYSIS: With Dorival, the San Paolo lights a long-extinguished flame

The coach is unbeaten in eight games and shows a poise that can make fans dream

Nine games, eight wins, one draw. Furthermore, there are 14 goals scored and four conceded. Something is noteworthy: São Paulo by Dorival Júnior brings back a flame that hasn’t been lit for a long time. The 4-2 victory against Vasco this Saturday (20th) gave another vision of the work that the coach is consolidating within the club. Today it is a much more mature and organized team.

It was an exciting game, that’s for sure. A show among the boys of Cotia, Nestor who seeks his redemption with the crowd, a victory that almost escapes … A little bit of everything. And although it was a more alternative team, with Arboleda spared, Pablo Maia among the reserves, one could understand the team’s organization on the pitch.

Rafinha, who has his longest run this season at right-back, has been a bit more stuck with defenders. Rodrigo Nestor appeared a lot on the right, Caio was more free from full back, he spoke a lot on the left with Luciano and Marcos Paulo, and this system seemed to work well.

One of the highlights of Saturday’s match (20) were the counter-attacks from San Paolo. In fact, two goals started like this: Rodrigo Nestor and Juan.

However, it cannot be said that Vasco did so badly. Conversely, Barbieri’s team started the match very intensely, putting a lot of pressure on the San Paolo. But just one more dangerous move was enough and Calleri managed to open the scoring, which changed the whole course of the match. And it’s worth saying: not even when Cruzmaltino tried to equalize, the Tricolor did not lose heart. In this case Beraldo and Juan stood out and gave the team victory.

One of the strong points, in fact, was the offensive sector. Calleri’s last goal was against América-MG, and now he has scored again. Juan also got off to a good start and proved to be a player who stands out ‘in front of goal’, something not often seen with Rogério Ceni, who preferred to use the young striker more as a winger. Luciano played one of his best games of the year. Furthermore, the midfield looked much more organized than in the last few games.

The only aspect that could have been improved concerns the defensive sector, which was greatly affected by Arboleda’s absence, even in Vasco’s brace. The first goal came from an aerial ball, one of the Ecuadorian’s strengths. The second from a cross in the area where the defense was exposed.

However, in a record crowd day at Morumbi in 2023, the difference in São Paulo is notable, beyond the results. A team that now leaves the field to applause that before, this year, were boos. A team that has risen to the next level and is therefore recognized by its fans.
