Corinthians lost against Flamengo 1-0 this Sunday afternoon, at the Maracanã, in a match valid for the seventh round of the Brazilian championship. Timão created scoring chances during the 90 minutes, but was not efficient and was punished in stoppage time with a goal from Léo Pereira. With the defeat, coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo goes six games without a win for the Alvinegra.
Furthermore, the setback keeps Corinthians with five points, in 17th place in the Brasileirão. Flamengo leaps to sixth position, with 12 units conquered.
Now, Corinthians will take the field next Wednesday, against Argentinos Juniors, for the fourth round of the group stage of the Copa Libertadores. The match will be played at 21:30 (Brasilia time), in Buenos Aires. Flamengo, in turn, faces Ñublense, on the same day and at the same time.
The game
The first half was balanced at the Maracanã. As expected, Corinthians did not insist on having possession and waited for Flamengo in the defensive field. With this proposal, the Luxembourg team managed to close the gaps and have a good escape velocity.
Timão’s first big goal chance of the match came in the 28th minute. In a game of speed, Adson found Róger Guedes on the right, without scoring. The number 10 finished aimlessly, but Yuri Alberto grazed the ball to push it into the back of the net.
Flamengo only risked the Corinthians goal in stoppage time of the first leg. Gabigol ends up at the entrance to the area for Cássio’s defense and, shortly after, Victor Hugo sews a shot in midfield and shoots dangerously, raising the Rossoneri crowd present.
In the second half, however, Corinthians started with everything. After just three minutes, goalkeeper Santos misplaced the ball and then “fixed” the move by making two saves from kicks by Yuri Alberto and Róger Guedes. Shortly after, the number 9 has another chance, with a header, but goes wide.
Corinthians were better off in the following minutes and Flamengo fans showed impatience with players like Gerson and Vidal, as well as coach Jorge Sampoli. Timão took advantage of the home team’s nervousness and suffered little in defense for much of the final tournament.
In the final minutes, even without a great performance, Flamengo scored the winning goal through defender Léo Pereira. Everton Cebolinha made an individual play on the left side and crossed the defender’s head, who “became an attacker” in the silence of stoppage time.
