The second edition of ‘Nerd Business’ seeks to simplify the study of economics with examples from geek culture

What does Hogwarts, the school of magic of Harry Potterthe universe of Star Wars and Bruce Wayne, the Batman, can teach business, finance and entrepreneurship? It is this question that the accountant André Charone answers in the second edition of the book nerd business, published by the Uiclap publishing house.

Sitting with his back to a wall filled with accounting certificates and diplomas, Charone proudly wears a Scrooge McDuck tie, Disney’s cheap duck. The contrast between his two “worlds” – his work as an accountant and his passion for geek culture – also come together in the new book.

“[O livro] it was a proof of love for these two universes of mine”, says André Charone.

To the Earth, the author says he “knows he’s not Paulo Coelho” to make a living off bookselling, but that he wanted to bring to his interested readers some of the lessons he’s been able to capture from his favorite pop works. “I always try to bring these subjects, which are a bit more complex, in a more playful, fun and didactic way for my students,” he says.

OR Batman, for example, used accounting to bust one of Gotham City’s villains. In The dark Knight, Bruce Wayne pretends to merge with Chinese accountant Lau’s company. With the merger request, Bruce has access to the villain’s company accounts and is sure that he was laundering money for the mob. “Whenever I talk about forensic accounting, I use this example, because a lot can be seen in a company’s accounting,” explains the author.

Superman got into trouble with the IRS in a comic. “I show how he solved it and how we can apply it in our lives, to avoid having problems with RE,” explains Charone. Even the Avengers have had problems with the IRS.

The research for the book was, of course, done by André, an avowed fan of the universe. “It was fun. I already had a lot of examples that I used in my lessons and other things that I ‘fished’. Being a nerd means looking at content and doing a lot of research about it, going beyond what is shown on the screen, for example. I always have,” he says.

The first edition of the book, “handmade”, as André explains, is available for free download at this link. The recently released second edition physical book can be purchased on amazon.
