Warning, this article contains spoilers for the end of Netflix’s El Silencio.
Netflix didn’t need to promote its latest Spanish production, El Silencio. The platform bet on one of its stadiums – Aaron Piper of Élite – as a headliner, with an intriguing brief and a format that works for it every time. Within days of its release, the thriller is already at the top of the most viewed series on the platform.
It has to be said that El Silencio plays with the audience that in the end we really don’t know who to believe. We learn, thanks to his sister’s testimony, that Sergio did indeed kill his parents out of anger because he no longer wanted to continue treatment. This confession is made in front of the cameras and in front of Ana (Almudena Amor), who has gradually grown closer to him.
When Sergio realizes that he is going to be arrested and he was able to see his sister for the last time, he gradually approaches the balcony and takes the psychiatrist by the hand. The camera pans out and changes angles. We see someone jump over the edge without knowing who it is. And this is exactly the choice of the screenwriters.
El Silencio points to the excesses of authority and how far it can take us: from parents who drug their child to a toxic boyfriend (Manu Rios), to a psychiatrist who watches his patient like an animal in a cage with cameras. at home.
If the viewer follows the case from a distance, the final scene of the series is to react to it: is the hero the culprit or the victim? Isn’t he a victim of the system and the corruption it causes? Or is it a monster that society can’t help?
But if we decipher the images well (especially the dark-colored clothes), everything suggests that it is Sergio who throws himself into the void (or does Anna do it?). As El Silencio is a mini-series, which therefore does not foresee a second season, the death of the main character will finally close the chapter.
