The case occurred in January of this year when people, hitherto unidentified, threw a black doll hanging by its neck in hate speech against the player
Madrid, Spain – Four people suspected of hanging a doll depicting the Real Madrid player, Vinicius Juniorhanged on a road bridge in Madrid in January they were arrested this Tuesday 22, Spanish police informed.
The arrests come two days after the latest case of racism against the Brazilian striker in a league match against the Brazilian Valencia.
The doll was hung by the neck in the morning of a classic between real Madrid AND Madrid athletics for the King’s Cup at the beginning of the year. With it was a banner reading “Madrid hates Real”.
The perpetrators of the crime used a black doll with the name of Vinícius, tied a rope around his neck and hung it from an overpass during the night.
Spanish media said police had used security cameras to identify the perpetrators of the crime, but no action had been taken so far.
The banner’s hate message is often used by one of Atlético’s supporter groups, who have denied being responsible for the display. Police did not immediately say whether the detainees had any ties to those fans.
Vinícius has been the subject of repeated racist taunts in Spainespecially after she started dancing to celebrate her goals.
In the last attack, the match against Valencia last weekend was temporarily discontinued after Vinícius had heard a portion of rival fans call him a monkey in the second half. He pointed to where the insults were coming from in the stands and referee Ricardo de Burgos decided to stop the match. Vinícius considered leaving the field, but he ended up playing on.
The match resumed after a warning over the stadium’s sound system, calling for an end to racist demonstrations. Later, in a general confusion, Vinícius left his arm in front of Tough Hugh and was the only player sent off in stoppage time.
The Brazilian has received the support of officials and athletes from around the world and has strongly criticized Spanish football for not doing more to end racism.
Valencia have given a life ban to a fan identified for insulting Vinícius during the match. Real Madrid took the case to the public ministrydeeming it a hate crime.
The Spanish league has filed nine criminal charges for racism against Vinícius in the past two seasons, most of which have been dropped by prosecutors./AFP and AP
