German intelligence sees no signs of weakening Putin

Criticism of the war in Ukraine does not threaten the Russian government, which has enough troops and equipment to continue the conflict, says the head of the German Federal Investigation Bureau. a weakening of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose regime remains stable, he stressed the German Federal Investigation Department (BND), Germany’s foreign intelligence service.

“We see no cracks in Putin’s system,” BND head Bruno Kahl said on Monday.

Kahl said that despite isolated criticism in Russia of the conduct of the war in the neighboring country – related to the supply of munitions, for example – there were no indications that Putin’s regime was under threat.

“Russia remains in the position of waging a long-term war,” Kahl said, noting that the country can always recruit new soldiers for this.

According to the BND chairman, Moscow also has enough military equipment and ammunition.

Kahl acknowledged there were weaknesses, including the performance of the Russian military, but said if the West doesn’t support Ukraine in a very well-organized way, Putin’s long-term strategy could prevail.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Currently, the disputed eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut is the epicenter of the war.

On Sunday, the President of Ukraine, Volodymir Zelenskiy, said that Bakhmut, the scene of a fierce battle between Russian and Ukrainian troops since August 2022, had been completely destroyed, but denied it had been taken by Russian forces. On Saturday, the head of the Russian Wagner paramilitary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, announced the takeover of the city.
