Italian president says mafia is ‘cancer’

Among tributes to mark the 31st anniversary of the Capaci bombing, in which Judge Giovanni Falcone died, the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, said on Tuesday (23) that the Mafia is a “cancer”.

“Magistrates such as Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino have demolished the mafia presumption, revealing what the mafia really is: a cancer for the civil community, deprived of all honor and dignity,” said the head of state.

The representative also commented that the mafia is an organization of criminals “nothing invincible”, as well as calling for the continuation of actions to combat crime.

“The actions must continue with ever greater commitment and determination. The mafia can be defeated and is destined to end, as Falcone taught us”, he added.

The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, said that the arrest of mafioso Matteo Messina Denaro, detained after 30 years on the run, is proof that the authorities are committed to the fight against organized crime.

“I am shocked by the brutality of that era of mafia massacres. I chose to become involved in politics because I saw it as the most useful tool for doing something. The arrest of Matteo Messina Denaro is testimony to the tireless commitment of many men and the women”, said the premier during a ceremony in Palermo.

The Sicilian capital is the scene of numerous tributes to the fallen of the Capaci massacre of 1992. The events mainly took place in the judicial bunker of the Ucciardone prison in Palermo.

Engaged in the fight against the mafia, Falcone was killed after the car he was traveling in was hit by an explosion. The magistrate’s murder was similar to that of judge Paolo Borsellino, which took place two months later. .
