Russia conducts counter-terrorism operations in Ukraine

The Kremlin accuses Kiev of supporting groups that oppose the government of Vladimir Putin

Russian military forces keep theirs “counter-terrorism operation” after what appeared to be one of Ukraine’s biggest cross-border incursions since the outbreak of war in February 2022.

As fighting in the Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine enters its second day, Russian officials say drones have been shot down by anti-aircraft guns; eight people were injured and some residents are fleeing.

Ukraine denies Russia’s claim that Kiev was behind the attacks. Ukrainian military intelligence alleged that two armed Russian opposition groups – the Russian Freedom Legion and the Russian Volunteer Corps, both made up of Russian nationals – were responsible for the attacks.

The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyvisited the Marines on the Eastern Front to thank them for their role in resisting the Russian invasion.

Ukraine has hundreds of millions of dollars in loans, military and logistical support from member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the war against Russia.

The Kremlin reiterated its statement “Ukrainian militants” are still active in the Belgorod region, one day after local authorities said a “counter-terrorism operation” to repel what they called a Ukrainian sabotage group.

Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said in an interview that Russia’s military campaign has been launched to prevent such incidents and that more efforts are needed from the Russian side. Kiev, on the other hand, reported that it is closely following the situation in Belgorod, but “it does not matter”referring to alleged support for groups opposing the Russian government by Vladimir Putin.
