Top Gun: Maverick made a change you may not have even noticed, but that could also be why Tom Cruise’s movie doesn’t have a release date in China.

After more than 30 years, Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is finally back on the big screen Top Gun: Maverick. The highly anticipated sequel features some truly impressive aerial feats (which required actors to have real flight training ) as well as some legitimate emotional issues. While the film is enjoyed by many in the US and other parts of the world this weekend, there is at least one place where the film has yet to be released: China. And likely, the lack of a release date for the film could be due to a small change in the film that some viewers may not have noticed yet.

The first trailer of Top Gun: Maverick debuted in 2019 and quickly brought audiences back to the cockpit with Tom Cruise’s beloved Navy pilot. Something eagle-eyed fans may have noticed is that the production team made a small but important change to the character’s signature aviator suit. In the original film, the back of his jacket featured a patch with the Japanese and Taiwanese flags. However, in the trailer, these emblems have been replaced with random symbols. Check out this tweet, which was posted shortly after the footage aired and shows the difference between the original film and the sequel:

As mentioned in the tweet, the change was likely made to appease the Chinese government. The country has cracked down on what can be projected into the region. China is a huge market for films and it could be argued that it could give the international box office a boost for Paramount Pictures’ latest release. However, it appears that plans have changed.

The finished film revealed that the jacket once again featured the Japanese and Taiwanese flags. While we can’t say for sure, this is the only reason why Top Gun: Maverick has not yet received a release window in China, the outfit could be a contributing factor. Even this creative move doesn’t seem to go unnoticed by entertainment pundits. while talking with Vice World News Ho Siu Bun, a Hong Kong-based film critic, seemed surprised by the decision:

It is unprecedented. Major film studios have never hesitated to bow to the Chinese market. And even though it’s a simple scene, assembly is very expensive. So no one knows why they changed it.

Ironically, the the aviator jacket was a great creative challenge completely for another reason. Apparently, Tom Cruise was lukewarm about including him in the first place, despite many fans associating him with the character. While Cruise couldn’t think of a solid reason in the narrative why the pilot still had it, he and the filmmakers ultimately decided to establish that it was Maverick’s “lucky jacket.”

While the garment may be one of the reasons for the sequel’s delay in China, the film got off to a good start here in the United States. The film broke records on its first day , giving Paramount the best Thursday night preview and the best Memorial Day preview ever. In addition to this, the film also received good reviews from critics, which promoted aerial shots . Even Gossipify’s Eric Eisenberg, in reviewing him, hailed him as an exciting film that could take your breath away .

I would say that Top Gun: Maverick he’s pretty fit right now, and you really couldn’t ask for a better big-screen return for Tom Cruise’s Pete Mitchell. Whether he and his companions will ever land in China remains to be seen.

After the review Top Gun: Maverick this weekend, be sure to check out Gossipify’s schedule for upcoming movie to learn more about the big screen adventures that await us in the months to come.
