Eliana cries remembering the case of child abuse: ‘It’s worth talking about’

In 2016, a girl reported being abused after being encouraged by the TV presenter

Summary

Eliana was moved when she recalled on the “Conversa com Bial” program the case of a girl who reported sexual abuse after seeing her appeal on the SBT, underlining the importance of giving a voice to the victims.

The presenter Eliana Michaelichen Bezerra, 52 years old, cried in the early hours of Friday 24th to Saturday 25th, recalling the case of a little girl who found the courage to report sexual abuse after seeing her program on television.

“‘Jornal da Cidade’, Bauru, 7 June 2016: ‘After seeing news reports of rape, a 7-year-old girl reports her father. A 7-year-old girl was innocently watching TV on a Sunday afternoon when she came across an appeal from the presenter Eliana, on her SBT programme, for rape victims to ask for help. It was enough for the girl to report to her mother the abuse she suffered in a neighborhood in the region south-east of Bauru”, the presenter told another edition of Conversation with Bial (Globe).

“The attacker was his father.”

At the end of the contextualization, Pedro Bial questioned Eliana about the case. At that moment the presenter was already crying. He received a tissue from production, took a deep breath and gave his report.

“Now you understand me… This touched me deeply. During that time, while I was working for the Brazilian family, a very serious case of gang rape occurred. And, being a woman in charge of a Sunday program – a space occupied mainly by men for many years -, I felt obliged, Bial, to be the voice of so many women,” she said, wiping away tears.

The presenter continued: “This case, for me, was what demonstrated that it was worth the risk, that it was worth speaking out. And I didn’t speak alone. It brought people who for years have been reporting, supporting, welcoming, instructing and educating women not to feel oppressed and silenced. I hope to have contributed, with this attitude, to helping and saving many other women.”
